Myths about braces

Myth 1 – “Braces are not attractive”

  Modern braces have come along way since the larger and uglier constructions they used to be in the past. Nowadays, braces have become hardy noticeable in a person’s mouth. Choosing an aesthetic option from the various types of braces available is quite easy as they are now so compact. Indeed, braces can now be viewed as a fashionable accessory, showing that a person cares for his/her oral health and appearance.

Myth 2 – “Wearing braces is painful”

  Discomfort caused by wearing braces is felt only during the first week after they are placed in the mouth. After this, the mouth adapts to the new shape around the teeth. There is a slight tightness felt after the orthodontist has adjusted the braces, but this is not painful. No pain is felt while wearing braces.

Myth 3 – “After braces are removed, teeth will go back to the way they were before braces were placed”

  If the patient follows the orthodontist’s recommendations, this is not possible. In some cases, after braces are removed, a retainer is put on the inner side of the teeth or the patient has to wear a special cap at night time. The retainer is a very thin wire that connects teeth, helping them retain their appropriate positions. It is completely invisible and does not cause discomfort in the mouth.

Myth 4 – “Braces destruct tooth enamel”

  Braces cannot destroy tooth enamel because when they are placed, a special material is used to protect the enamel. Enamel can suffer only as a result of improper oral care whilst wearing braces. Without proper care, dental plaque can build up around the braces and eventually cause caries and other issues.

   

Myth 5 – Braces are applied only for children

• 

  Bite correction and tooth straightening with the use of braces is possible at any age. There are no age restrictions for braces placement and in fact, in recent years more and more adults are getting braces treatment.
